Temenos II for the first time in Barcelona

Arrived in Barcelona Friday October 19th, TEMENOS II and all the team members took their quarters within the Spanish nautical capital. For Michèle Paret and Dominique Wavre, alone on board the mono hull for this sail over to Barcelona, this training proved very beneficial, less than one month of the departure of the Barcelona World Race.

Mission accomplished for Dominique Wavre and TEMENOS!
It was under a hot, beating sun that Dominique crossed the finish line on Saturday 11th November at 2222 hours French time, finishing 5th in the Imoca class after 13 days, 9 hours and 20 minutes of racing. The monohull safely completed its first transatlantic at an average of 11.02 knots.

Lack of wind for Temenos
During
a short radio chat session with his shore crew at noon, the Swiss skipper
was still battling his way across a windless zone. TEMENOS has been suffering
a hazardous succession of squalls and calm and its skipper is being forced
to perform a series of manœuvres in order to limit the additional
loss of miles in relation to his opponents.

The battle continues to rage for the third place

Although the first monohulls are unlikely to shatter the event record as the multihull category did, the intensity of the racing in the Imoca class will likely go down in history in this the 8th edition of the Route du Rhum - la Banque Postale.

TEMENOS goes up a place

Since yesterday the leaders have been making headway in a steady N’ly air flow, which has been continuing to build. The brand new Owen Clarke Design is positively lapping up the trade winds, snatching back 16 miles from Sill-Véolia in the last 24 hours, 14 from VM-Matériaux and 59 from Virbac-Paprec. TEMENOS is making a spectacular recovery now up in 3rd position.

The front finally arrives for TEMENOS!
Between 6 and 7 more knots on the speedo, nearly twice the speed of TEMENOS, at this pace, the VM Matériaux / Virbac-Paprec duo didn’t need any persuading to take back the 2nd and 3rd places respectively, relegating TEMENOS to 4th position. Also now free of the ridge of high pressure, Dominique has logically lost some ground on his adversaries overnight.

TEMENOS snatches 2nd place!
Headline news today has been the superb victory of Norman sailor, Lionel Lemonchois, who crossed the finish line after just 7 days and 17 hours at sea, pulverising the previous event record by 4 days; but amidst the monohull fleet the suspense is still palpable. At the latest 1600 hour ranking TEMENOS had snatched back second place, Virbac-Paprec and VM-Matériaux slipping back down to 3rd and 4th position respectively.

Heat, light conditions and suspense for the Imoca fleet
Barring serious damage, Guadeloupe is preparing to celebrate the victory of Lionel Lemonchois in the multihull fleet of this 8th Route du Rhum – La Banque Postale. Meantime it’s difficult to make any kind of short term forecast as to the winner of the monohull fleet as the cards are constantly being reshuffled within the top trio.

TEMENOS caught in a calm zone
After the night-time blackout when not a single position is communicated by the race organisers, the first of the day’s rankings occasionally has some surprises in store. This was indeed the case this morning within the Imoca fleet, with a fantastic comeback by Jean Le Cam. As the hours went by, the latter continued his progress, finally getting abeam of Jean-Pierre Dick’s Virbac-Paprec.

26.3 knots on TEMENOS’ speedo…
At the 1600 hour ranking, the five leading boats had gybed to the West, some leaving it later than others like Sill-Véolia, which extended its original tack in an attempt to gain some Southing.

Southerly Option for TEMENOS
No upsets in the Imoca fleet since yesterday, except perhaps in terms of the ranking, which now has Sill-Véolia as the new leader. For the rest of the monohulls progress continues to be made in a steady 20-25 knots E’ly. The sea has built a little since the day before and logically there is more load on the hardware. .

Daggerboard issue aboard
It is constantly reiterated that sailing is a mechanical sport and Vincent Riou paid the price yesterday evening aboard his brand new monohull. On learning the news Dominique, who was surprised to no longer be able to make out the mast of the orange monohull in his wake, immediately put two and two together about what had happened to the skipper of PRB at the end of the day.

Light conditions for the first few hours of racing
Decidedly, the scenario for the start of this 8th edition of the Route du Rhum – la Banque Postale is radically different than that of the previous edition. Yesterday everyone seemed to be delighting in the light conditions, but the particularly testing conditions of the first night had changed the outlook somewhat today

With just two days to go till the start of the Route du Rhum - la Banque Postale, there is a real buzz on the pontoons and the boats. The crowd of spectators massed around the basins is confirmation of the success of this infamous quadrennial event, that skippers are keen to add to their track.

Message of Dominique from New Zealand
"We are now on our way for the last details.
The coach roof is on place, so all the important parts which are carbon made are finished. There is still an immense list of small laminated details that has to be realised and supervised. The keel will arrive soon and the big hydraulic rams will arrive a bit delayed, so the launched date is now the 6th of June.

2006 bodes well for the new Temenos and its skipper
A rather brisk 2005 has meant no down time for Dominique Wavre. A few weeks after completing the Vendée Globe, Temenos, a provider of banking software packages, expressed its desire to extend its confidence in the skipper and entrust the helm of a brand new Imoca 60 footer to him. Since that moment it has been a race against the clock for Dominique who hopes to see the new Temenos in action from the next Route du Rhum in October 2006.
